A 10x20 storage unit is 10 ft wide and 20 ft deep: 200 sq ft of floor and 1,600 cu ft at an 8 ft ceiling. This free tool shows the size of a 10 × 20 ft storage unit in feet and meters, and estimates how full that unit would be for the items you enter. It runs in your browser. The page gives the floor area and volume of the unit and lists what four storage operators’ guides say a 10 × 20 unit holds. You can then enter your own furniture and boxes to see whether they are likely to fit. Use it to check a planned load before you rent, or to compare the unit against a list of belongings.

How to use the 10x20 storage unit tool

  1. Open More options if you want to change the stack height or the empty space. Set Usable stack height (ft) (the default is 7, and it can be set from 1 to 12). Set Space to leave empty (%) (the default is 10; enter 0 to use the whole space).
  2. Enter a whole-number count for each item: Medium boxes, Large boxes, Queen beds (frame and mattress), King beds (frame and mattress), Dressers, Sofas (3 cushion), Armchairs, Dining tables (4 to 6 seats), Dining chairs, Refrigerators, Washing machines and Dryers. Leave a count at 0 if you do not have that item.
  3. Read the result. It shows the cubic feet your items use and how full the usable space would be, along with a verdict such as “Yes, with about 505 cu ft to spare”.
  4. If the result says the items are too much, it shows how many cubic feet over you are. Try a larger unit, or reduce the empty space you are keeping free.

The example buttons, Just the size, 3-bedroom load and Full unit, fill the form with sample numbers. Use 3-bedroom load to see a realistic result before you enter your own items.

Change a count and the result updates, so you can try a few loads quickly.

How big is a 10x20 storage unit in square feet?

A 10 × 20 ft storage unit has 200 square feet of floor space, found by multiplying width by length (10 × 20 = 200). With an 8 ft ceiling, the total volume is 1,600 cubic feet. Guide B lists the unit as 10 feet wide, 20 feet deep and 8 feet tall, and guide D says most standard units are about 8 feet tall. Unit sizes are approximate, so inspect the actual unit before you rely on these numbers.

What size is a 10x20 storage unit in meters?

A 10 × 20 ft unit measures 3.048 × 6.096 m, has a floor area of 18.58 m², and a volume of 45.31 m³ at 8 ft tall. To convert feet to meters, multiply by 0.3048 (1 ft = 0.3048 m). To convert square feet to square meters, multiply by 0.0929, so 200 × 0.0929 = 18.58. Cubic feet convert to cubic meters by multiplying by 0.0283.

How many bedrooms fit in a 10x20 storage unit?

Roughly two to four bedrooms, depending on which operator’s guide you read and how full each room is. Guide A says up to four full bedrooms’ worth, guide B says about two to three bedrooms, guide C says roughly a three-bedroom home’s belongings, and guide D says the furniture of a two-bedroom home.

The tool checks this by adding up packed cubic feet for each item. Packed volumes are: queen bed 65, king bed 70, sofa 50, refrigerator 50, dresser 25, washer 25, dining table 25, dryer 20, armchair 10, dining chair 5, large box 4.5 and medium box 3. The calculation is:

  • Usable volume = 200 sq ft × stack height
  • Percent full = total cubic feet of items ÷ usable volume × 100

The default load, “3-bedroom load”, adds up to 755 cu ft. Against the full 1,400 cu ft at a 7 ft stack, that is 53.9%. The verdict of about 505 cu ft to spare comes after the 10 percent empty allowance: 1,400 × 0.9 = 1,260, and 1,260 − 755 = 505.

Will a car fit in a 10x20 storage unit?

Yes, a standard car fits according to the operator guides. Guide A says the unit fits one vehicle. Guide B lists standard cars, sedans, SUVs and pickup trucks, with a 20 ft vehicle space. Guide D says it fits a standard car, and suggests this size for bigger vehicles than a 10 × 15 unit would take. The tool does not take vehicles as an input, so it cannot check a specific car. The car size page covers that check.

Frequently asked questions

Does the tool guarantee that my items will fit?

No. The result is an estimate based on the packed cubic feet of each item and the stack height and empty space you set. Operators’ unit sizes vary slightly, so check the exact unit before you rent.

Is anything I enter saved or sent anywhere?

No. Nothing you enter is stored or uploaded, and the tool needs no sign-up. It only asks for item counts, stack height and empty space.

What happens if my items are more than the unit can hold?

The result says how many cubic feet too much the items are and shows a warning suggesting a larger unit or less empty space. You can also try changing the stack height, but check the real ceiling height of the unit first. Guide D notes that most standard units are about 8 ft tall, with some offering 10 or 12 ft.

Why does the tool leave 10 percent empty by default?

The 10 percent is this page’s own planning allowance, not a figure from any source. It is meant as room for gaps and a walkway. Set the value to 0 to use the whole space.

Can I change the stack height?

Yes. Under More options, set Usable stack height (ft) from 1 to 12. The default is 7 ft, which gives 1,400 cubic feet of usable volume. A warning appears above 8 ft.

Where do the item volumes come from?

The furniture and appliance volumes are packed cubic feet from the State of Alaska Department of Public Safety “Household Goods Move Cube Sheet” (REV 02-14-2024). The medium and large box volumes of 3 and 4.5 cubic feet come from a moving box guide by HireAHelper. Packed volumes include the gaps around furniture, so they are higher than the measured volume of each item.
