How to use the 10x30 storage unit tool
- Read the top of the result first: the size, the floor area and the volume at an 8 ft ceiling are shown even before you enter anything.
- Pick a preset if you want a starting point: “Just the size”, “3-bedroom load” or “Full unit”. Each one fills in item counts that you can change.
- Enter how many of each item you plan to store: medium boxes, large boxes, queen beds, king beds, dressers, sofas (3 cushion), armchairs, dining tables, dining chairs, refrigerators, washing machines and dryers. Leave 0 for anything you will not store.
- Open “More options” if you want to change “Usable stack height (ft)”. It starts at 7 ft and accepts 1 to 12 ft. A warning appears above 8 ft, so check the ceiling and door height of your unit.
- In “More options”, also adjust “Space to leave empty (%)”. It starts at 10 percent, which is this page’s own allowance for gaps and a walkway. Set it to 0 to fill the unit completely.
- Read “Your items” for the total cubic feet and “How full it would be” for the share of the usable volume.
- Check “Do they fit?”. It says yes with the cubic feet to spare, or no with the cubic feet too much.
How big is a 10x30 storage unit in feet, meters and cubic feet?
A 10 × 30 ft storage unit has 300 sq ft of floor. With an 8 ft ceiling it has 2,400 cu ft of space, which is 27.87 m² of floor and 67.96 m³ of volume.
Floor area is width times depth: 10 ft × 30 ft = 300 sq ft. Volume is floor area times height: 300 sq ft × 8 ft = 2,400 cu ft. To convert to metric, use 1 ft = 0.3048 m, so the floor is 3.048 m × 9.144 m = 27.87 m² and the volume is 67.96 m³. Two of the guides list the unit as 8 ft tall, and one says most standard units are about 8 ft tall while some facilities have ceilings of 10 to 12 ft.
What fits in a 10x30 storage unit?
The guides call it the largest standard size, and they describe its contents in different ways. Guide A says an entire household’s belongings. Guide B lists king and queen bedroom sets, dining sets, refrigerators, washers and dryers, TVs, large tubs, large vehicles and boats, about 4 to 5 bedrooms. Guide D says a three- to four-bedroom home, and that it also fits a pickup truck or a small boat. Guide B describes its 30 ft vehicle space as fitting most large RVs and boats.
The tool estimates fit with a simple method. Usable volume = 300 sq ft × stack height. At the default 7 ft that is 2,100 cu ft, and with the default 10 percent kept empty, 1,890 cu ft counts as usable. The 10 percent is this page’s own planning allowance, not a source figure.
Each item uses a packed cubic foot value: medium box 3, large box 4.5, queen bed 65, king bed 70, dresser 25, sofa 50, armchair 10, dining table 25, dining chair 5, refrigerator 50, washer 25, dryer 20. Item figures come from the State of Alaska Department of Public Safety “Household Goods Move Cube Sheet” (REV 02-14-2024), a single source. Box volumes of 3 and 4.5 cu ft for medium and large come from a moving box guide. Packed cubic feet include the gaps around furniture, so they are higher than an item’s measured volume.
Two examples show how the numbers add up. The default load of 40 medium boxes, 20 large boxes, 2 queen beds, a king bed, 3 dressers, 2 sofas, 2 armchairs, a dining table, 6 dining chairs, a refrigerator, a washer and a dryer totals 755 cu ft. That is about 36 % of 2,100 cu ft, leaving about 1,135 cu ft within the 1,890 cu ft target. A load of 300 medium boxes, 150 large boxes, 4 king beds and 4 sofas totals 2,055 cu ft, which is about 165 cu ft more than the target, so it needs less empty space or a second unit.
