How to use the Bath Mat Size Chart
- Under “Mat goes in front of”, choose Bathtub or shower, or Vanity or sink. You can also tap an Examples chip, such as Tub 60 in, to fill the form.
- Under “Show sizes in”, pick inches or centimeters. One inch is exactly 2.54 cm.
- Type the “Length of the tub or vanity”. Measure along the wall: the tub opening, or the vanity front. A length outside 12 to 120 in triggers a warning.
- Open “More options” if you want to change the “Clearance at each end”. It starts at 2 in, the low end of the 2 to 3 in that one guide advises.
- Read “Longest mat for the space”. For a tub you also get “Shortest mat that covers the tub”, shown as half and two-thirds of the tub length. A vanity has no shortest mat, because no guide gives one.
- Read “Sizes that fit” and, if it appears, “Fit depends on the guide”. The table below lists every size as Fits, Depends on the guide, Too long or Too short, with the share of your length it covers.
- Scroll to the chart of guide figures. The contour, round and oval rows are listed there but are not part of the fit check.
If the clearance at both ends leaves no room for a mat, you get an error. Reduce the clearance or enter a longer length, and the result updates. “How it was calculated” shows the steps.
How is the longest bath mat length worked out?
The longest mat is the length of the tub opening or vanity front minus twice the clearance. The tool assumes the mat lies with its long side along the tub or vanity, so clearance is taken from both ends.
One guide advises leaving 2 to 3 inches between the rug and any wall or fixture base. The tool starts at 2 inches, the low end of that advice, and you can change it. For a 60 in tub with 2 in clearance, the calculation is 60 − (2 × 2) = 56 in. That is the longest mat the tool will show for that tub.
Why do bath mat sizes differ from one guide to another?
The three public guides compared on this page do not agree on one standard size. Each row in the chart shows every guide’s own figures, along with the lowest-to-highest range. Nothing is averaged, so you can see where the guides differ.
For example, a small mat is 16 × 23 in in one guide and 17 × 24 in in two others. A standard tub mat is 20 × 30 in in one guide and 20 × 30 to 34 in in another. Sizes also vary by maker, and the guides are published buying guides rather than a standard. Treat the figures as typical sizes from named sources, not fixed rules.
How does the chart decide whether a mat size fits?
Each size is judged by its long side across all guides. It is marked Fits when every guide’s version fits the length you entered. It is marked Depends on the guide when only some versions fit, and Too long or Too short when none do. The chart also shows the share of your length that each mat would cover.
For a tub, the tool gives a shortest mat as well. One guide says a rug beside a tub should cover at least half to two-thirds of the tub opening’s length, so the tool shows length × ½ and length × ⅔. For a 60 in tub, that is 30 in and 40 in. No guide gives a minimum for a vanity, so the tool shows no shortest mat for one.
Using a 60 in tub with 2 in clearance, the standard tub mat (30–34 in), single-vanity mat (34 in) and large tub mat (36–40 in) fit. The small mat is too short, and the 60 in runner is too long. The large floor mat depends on the guide. For a 72 in double vanity with 3 in clearance, the longest mat is 72 − (2 × 3) = 66 in, so the 60 in runner fits.

Frequently asked questions
What is the standard bath mat size?
There is no single standard. The three guides on this page give a standard tub mat of 20 × 30 to 34 in, but one lists 20 × 30 and another 20 × 30 to 34. Sizes vary by maker, so the tool shows each guide’s own figures and the range.
What size bath mat fits in front of a vanity?
Typical single-vanity mats measure 20 to 21 × 34 in across the guides. A runner is 20 to 24 × 60 in. Enter your vanity front length and clearance to see the longest mat that fits your space.
How long should a bath rug be beside a tub?
One guide says it should cover at least half to two-thirds of the tub opening’s length. For a 60 in tub, that means a mat 30 to 40 in long. The tool works this out from the length you enter.
Can I see sizes in centimeters?
Yes. Use “Show sizes in” to switch between inches and centimeters. One inch equals exactly 2.54 cm, and the guides themselves list inches.
Does this chart cover area rugs?
No. It covers bath mats and bathroom rugs only. Area rugs and mats that sit inside the tub are not included.
Is the result a safety or code check?
No. The result is calculated from your inputs and typical sizes from the named guides. Check the actual product dimensions before you buy, because sizes vary by maker.
