How to use the bed sheet size tool
- Choose your bed in “Bed size”: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King or California king. For another size pick “Other size (enter it)” and type the mattress width and length.
- Under “Measure in”, choose inches or centimeters. The results are shown in both.
- Enter the “Mattress thickness”. Measure from the top of the mattress to the bottom, including any topper or pad on it. The page expects 4 to 30 in and warns outside that range.
- Open “More options” to change “Extra pocket depth”. It starts at 2 in, which sits within the 1 to 2 in one guide suggests and matches the 2 in minimum another gives. A value above 4 in triggers a warning.
- In the same place, “Flat sheet drop and tuck allowance” starts at 4 in. That is only a starting value that you choose, not a figure from a source.
- Read “Fitted sheet size”, which is the mattress surface.
- Read “Pocket depth needed” and the pocket class from sources A, B and C.
- Read “Flat sheet to cover and tuck” and “Flat sheets listed for this bed”, which shows how many listed flat sheets are at least that large.
- If a warning appears, adjust the thickness, the extra depth or the size and read the results again.
Four presets fill in a bed and thickness: Queen 12 in, King 14 in, Twin 9 in (with 1 in extra depth) and Queen with topper 16 in. Change any number afterwards.
What are the standard bed sheet sizes?
A fitted sheet matches the mattress surface. Typical mattress surfaces are twin 38 × 75 in, twin XL 38 × 80 in, full 54 × 75 in, queen 60 × 80 in, king 76 × 80 in and California king 72 × 84 in. One maker’s fitted-sheet chart lists the twin and twin XL as 39 in wide.
Flat sheet sizes change far more between makers. Sources disagree by many inches, so this page does not average them. For a queen, one source lists a flat sheet of 96 × 114 in, another lists 90 × 102 in, and a third lists 90 to 100 × 102 in. For king size bed sheets, the flat sizes run from 108 × 102 in to 114 × 114 in. Full flat sheets range from 81 × 96 in to 92 × 112 in, and one source’s text gives the full as 92 × 110 in in one place. Always check the label on the sheet you plan to buy.
How deep should a fitted sheet pocket be?
The pocket depth needed is your mattress thickness plus the extra pocket depth, and the tool shows that total. The extra depth default is 2 in. One source suggests choosing a sheet 1 to 2 in deeper than the mattress. Another says to measure the full stack, including protector or topper, and buy at least 2 in more. A third says to choose a pocket that meets or slightly exceeds the full stack.
The three sources also sort pockets into classes differently. Two sources classify by mattress thickness: standard is about 7 to 12 in and deep is about 13 to 17 in, while extra-deep is 18 to 25 in in one and about 18 in and up in the other. The third classifies the pocket depth, which is thickness plus the extra depth: standard is 12 to 15 in, deep is 16 to 18 in, and extra deep is 19 in and up.
For a 12 in queen with 2 in extra and a 4 in allowance, the fitted sheet is 60 × 80 in and the pocket needs to be at least 14 in, which is standard in all three sources. The flat sheet needed is 92 × 96 in. Two of the three listed queen flat sheets are at least that large. The third, at 90 × 102 in, is 2 in too narrow.
For a 14 in king, the pocket needs to be at least 16 in, which is deep in all three sources. The flat sheet needed is 112 × 98 in, and only one source’s 114 × 114 in sheet reaches it.
The flat sheet calculation uses this geometry: width equals mattress width plus two times the sum of thickness and allowance, and length equals mattress length plus thickness plus allowance. The sides and foot hang down, and the head end is tucked. This is a fit calculation, not a published rule.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a bath sheet size on this page?
No. This page covers bed sheets only. For bath towel sizes, see the Towel Size Chart linked below.
What is the bed sheet size queen?
A queen fitted sheet fits a mattress surface of 60 × 80 in, which is 152 × 203 cm. Flat queen sheets vary by maker, so use the tool to compare the listed queen sheet sizes against your own thickness.
What is a king size fitted sheet?
A king size fitted sheet fits a mattress surface of 76 × 80 in, which is 193 × 203 cm. The pocket depth you need depends on your mattress thickness plus any topper.
Will full size bed sheets fit a queen?
No. Full size bed sheets are sized for a 54 × 75 in mattress, which is smaller than a queen’s 60 × 80 in surface.
Why do flat sheet sizes differ between sources?
Each maker sets its own flat sheet dimensions, and the sources on this page disagree by many inches. The tool shows every source so you can compare them.
Why does the tool show a warning?
Warnings appear when thickness is outside 4 to 30 in, when a custom mattress size looks unusual, or when the extra pocket depth is over 4 in. Check those inputs, including whether the unit is inches or centimeters.
