This dumpster sizes tool is a free chart of roll-off dumpsters from 10 to 40 cubic yards, showing the length, width and height each published source gives for every size. Enter the length and width of the driveway or pad you plan to use, and it shows which sizes fit. The tool runs in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent anywhere. Use the chart to compare sizes before you call a hauler, then confirm the final choice with the company you rent from, because outside dimensions differ from one company to another. The tool compares the box only, with no room for the truck, so ask the hauler about access.

How to use the dumpster sizes chart

  1. Open the Type menu and choose a size, from 10-yard to 40-yard. The default is 20-yard.
  2. Type the length of your space in the Space length field.
  3. Open the unit menu beside Space length and choose the unit you measured in.
  4. Type the width of your space in the Space width field.
  5. Open the unit menu beside Space width and choose the matching unit.
  6. Read the result line, which lists the sizes that fit your space.
  7. Read the size line below it for the length, width and height range of the size you chose, and the line “Each source’s size” for every source’s own figures.
  8. To change the units of the chart, open More options and pick feet (ft) or meters (m) in Show the chart in.

The example buttons fill in a sample space, such as “Driveway 24×10” or “Pad 30×12”, so you can see how the results change. The Reset button restores the default settings.

The result line says that every size listed fits your space, that some sizes fit, or that none fit. A size fits completely when its largest length and width are inside your space. The check covers the box only, so leave room for the truck.

What is a cubic yard?

A cubic yard is a unit of volume: a cube that measures one yard on each side, which equals 27 cubic feet. A dumpster’s yard size tells you its capacity, so a 20-yard dumpster holds 540 cubic feet of material.

The yard size does not tell you the outside measurements. Those are the length, width and height of the box itself, and they are listed separately on the chart. Two dumpsters with the same yard size can have different outside dimensions, so check the length and width figures when you are working out whether a dumpster fits your driveway or pad.

How big is a 20 yard dumpster?

A 20-yard dumpster measures 22 to 22.75 ft long, 7.5 to 8.25 ft wide and 4 to 4.5 ft high. In metric, that is 6.71 to 6.93 m by 2.29 to 2.51 m by 1.22 to 1.37 m.

These figures are the lowest and highest values that any of the four sources gives. Source A gives 22 × 7.5 × 4.5 ft, Source B gives 22 × 8 × 4 ft, Source C gives 22.75 × 8.25 × 4.333 ft, and Source D gives 22 × 7.5 × 4.5 ft. The line “Each source’s size” shows each source’s figures, so you can see which one matches the dumpster you are quoted.

How big are 30 and 40 yard dumpsters?

A 30-yard dumpster measures 22 to 23.083 ft long, 7.5 to 8.25 ft wide and 6 to 6.083 ft high (6.71 to 7.04 m by 2.29 to 2.51 m by 1.83 to 1.85 m). A 40-yard dumpster has the same footprint, 22 to 23.083 ft long and 7.5 to 8.25 ft wide, and is 7.75 to 8 ft high (2.36 to 2.44 m). Sources A, B and C all give these two sizes, and they differ from each other by up to 1.083 ft in length. The extra capacity of the larger sizes comes from height, not from a larger footprint, so a space that fits a 30-yard box fits a 40-yard box by the length and width check.

Frequently asked questions

How big is a 10 yard dumpster?

A 10-yard dumpster measures 12 to 14 ft long, 7.5 to 8.25 ft wide and 3.5 to 4.333 ft high, or 3.66 to 4.27 m by 2.29 to 2.51 m by 1.07 to 1.32 m. Sources A and B give 14 × 7.5 × 3.5 ft, and Source B’s FAQ gives 12 × 8 × 3.5 ft for the same size.

Why do dumpster dimensions differ between companies?

Outside dimensions vary by hauler, and each source on the chart says so. For the 20-yard size, the four sources differ by up to 0.75 ft in length, 0.75 ft in width and 0.5 ft in height. The tool does not average these numbers. It shows each source’s figures, so you can see the spread.

Does the check include room for the truck?

No. The check compares the length and width of your space with the dumpster box only. It does not add room for the truck to place or pick up the dumpster, overhead wires, permits for streets or sidewalks, or weight limits. Ask the hauler about these before you book.

When does a size count as fitting?

A size counts as fitting when its largest figure fits inside your space. It counts as fitting partly when only its smallest figure fits. Check the size line to see which figures your space can take.

Does the tool cover prices or what can go in a dumpster?

No. Prices, rental terms and rules about what can go in a dumpster are not covered. Ask the company you rent from for these details.

How do I switch the chart to meters?

Open More options, then choose meters (m) in the Show the chart in menu. The sizes stay the same, and the figures are shown in metric.
