How to use the Moving Out Checklist
- Type an optional “Title (optional)”. If you add one, it is printed in front of every table heading.
- Under “Renting or owning”, choose “Renting” or “Owning” to match your home.
- Under “Where are you moving”, choose “Same state” or “Out of state”. Out of state adds records, license and registration steps.
- Open “More options” to tick the parts you need: “8 weeks before”, “4 weeks before”, “2 weeks before”, “Last week”, “Moving day”, “After the move”, and “Move-out cleaning, room by room”.
- Read “Printable checklist”, “Tasks on the list” and “Lists” to see how big the sheet is. Each ticked part becomes its own table with a check box, a task, and a blank “Notes / date” column.
- Untick any part you do not need, because the printed sheet only has the ticked parts. If no part is ticked, the page shows “Tick at least one part of the checklist.”
- Select “Print / save as PDF” to open the browser’s print dialog. Select “Copy link” to put your choices in the web address.
Four presets fill in the choices for you: Renting, same state; Renting, out of state; Owning, same state; and Owning, out of state. The print view hides the form and shows empty check boxes in plain black borders on white. It prints in black and white on US Letter or A4 portrait.
What does a moving out checklist include?
A moving out checklist lists the tasks you need to finish before, on, and after the day you leave, arranged by timing. This tool builds the list from task lists we wrote for ordinary households, and the parts you tick decide which tables appear. The timing parts run from “8 weeks before” to “after the move”, so you can spread the work across several weeks instead of one busy weekend.
Renting and owning change the tasks. A rental move out checklist includes steps such as reading the lease for the move-out notice, sending the notice, returning keys, and taking dated photos of empty rooms. Owning adds steps such as confirming the closing date and handing over keys as agreed. The only legal line the page draws is to read the lease or the landlord’s move-out instructions. It makes no claims about deposits, deadlines, or tenant rights, so check those with your lease or local authorities.
Moving out of state adds more work. A moving out of state checklist includes looking up the new state’s license and vehicle registration steps, updating voter registration, requesting records, and planning the driving route. A move within the same state adds one step: updating the address on your license and registration.
Counts show how the parts add up. Renting in the same state with every part ticked gives 10 tables and 72 tasks. Owning and moving out of state with every part ticked gives 76 tasks. Each table is a starting point, so you can delete tasks that do not apply to your home.
How is the move out cleaning checklist organized?
The move out cleaning checklist is the part you tick as “move-out cleaning room by room”. It has four tables: kitchen (7 tasks), bathrooms (6), bedrooms and living areas (7 for renters), and whole home (4). Working room by room means you finish one area before starting the next, which makes it easier to see what is left. The whole-home table covers tasks that apply to the entire house rather than one room.
The cleaning part adds 24 tasks to the default renting list. Because the bedrooms and living areas table has a renter version, switching between renting and owning changes that table. If you are moving out of a rental, you can use the cleaning tables together with the rental steps, such as taking dated photos of empty rooms, so the two sets of notes match.
The lists are written for ordinary households. There are no public sources for the individual tasks, and no brand names are used. Where your lease or landlord gives move-out instructions, follow those instead of the general steps here.

Frequently asked questions
Is this moving out checklist free to use?
Yes. The tool runs in your browser, is free, and needs no sign-up. Nothing you type is uploaded, and the page has no account or saved list.
Can I use it as a rental move out checklist?
Yes. Choose “Renting” and the list adds steps such as reading the lease for the move-out notice, returning keys, and taking dated photos of empty rooms. Read the lease or the landlord’s move-out instructions for the details that apply to you.
Does the tool tell me my legal deadlines?
No. The only legal line on the page is to read the lease or the landlord’s move-out instructions. The page makes no claims about deadlines, deposits, or tenant rights.
How do I print the list?
Select “Print / save as PDF” to open the browser’s print dialog. The print view hides the form and shows the tables with an empty check box in each row. It prints in black and white on US Letter or A4 portrait.
What changes for a moving out of state checklist?
Choose “Out of state” and the list adds steps to look up the new state’s license and vehicle registration steps, update voter registration, request records, and plan the driving route. Choosing the same state adds only one step: updating the address on your license and registration.
How do I keep my choices and come back later?
Select “Copy link”. The web address holds your choices, including the title you typed, so opening that link later shows the same list. The page does not save anything else for you.
