How to use the Pillow Size Chart
- Under “Pillow size”, choose standard, super standard, queen, king, Euro or body.
- Under “Show sizes in”, pick inches or centimeters. The conversion is exact, since 1 in = 2.54 cm.
- Under “Bed”, pick twin (38 in wide), full (54 in), queen (60 in), king (76 in) or California king (72 in). These mattress widths come from one public chart.
- Enter the “Number of sleepers” as a whole number. The field starts at 2.
- Open more options and set “Pillows per sleeper” to 1 pillow each or 2 pillows each.
- Read “Size (range across the guides)”, “Each guide, width × length” and “How much the guides differ” to compare the sources.
- Read “Fit across the head of the bed” for how many of that pillow lie side by side on the chosen bed.
- Read “Do your pillows fit?” for a yes or no. It shows whether that count covers your sleepers × pillows each.
- Check any warning. A pillow longer than the mattress is wide, such as a body pillow on a twin, gives none across and a warning. More than 6 sleepers also triggers a warning.
- For a quick start, load a preset: Standard x2, queen; King x2, king bed; Body pillow, queen; or Euro pillow, full.
Below the calculator, tables show the full chart, how many of your chosen pillow fit across every bed size, what two guides say about pillows per bed, and the guides compared.
How many pillows fit across a bed?
The calculator divides the mattress width by the long side of the pillow, then rounds the result down. Pillows lie with the long side across the bed, so a standard pillow (26 in long) on a queen bed (60 in) gives 60 ÷ 26 = 2.3, which rounds down to 2. The calculator allows no overhang and no overlap, so a pillow that does not fit fully within the width is not counted.
Two examples show how this works. Two sleepers with one standard pillow each on a queen bed need 2 pillows, and 2 fit, so the answer is yes. A king pillow (36 in long) on a queen bed gives 60 ÷ 36 = 1.7, so only 1 fits. The same pillow on a king bed (76 in) gives 76 ÷ 36 = 2.1, so 2 fit. The results are calculated from your inputs and reflect this strict count only.
What about body and Euro pillows?
Body pillows are 20 × 54 inches in all three guides, which is wider than a twin mattress (38 in) and as wide as a full (54 in). That is why a body pillow gives a count of 0 across a twin and the page warns you. The warning’s own note says body pillows are usually placed along the bed, so the across-the-head count is only a rough guide for them. Euro pillows are square at 26 × 26 inches, so the same 26 inches counts on every bed.
Why can the strict count be lower than a guide’s count?
A guide may describe pillows that touch, overlap or sit tight against the bed edge, while the calculator counts only full fits. This is why the page can show fewer pillows than a guide states. For example, one guide says two super standard pillows (28 in long) fit side by side on a full or queen bed. On a full bed, 54 ÷ 28 = 1.9, which rounds down to 1. Another guide says two king pillows fit a queen bed tightly. That arrangement overlaps the mattress edge, so the page counts 1.
The strict count is useful when you want a clear, no-overlap estimate. If a guide’s figure is what you need, compare it with the quoted statements in the “What two guides say about pillows per bed” table on the page. Sizes also vary by maker, so the exact dimensions of your pillow may differ from the typical sizes shown here. Super standard is listed by two guides, boudoir and throw by one guide each, and the page flags any size with a single source.

Frequently asked questions
What is the standard pillow size?
The standard pillow size is 20 × 26 inches (50.8 × 66 cm) in all three guides the chart uses. Super standard pillows are 20 × 28 inches, which is listed by two guides only. Sizes vary by maker, so check the exact product before you buy.
What is the queen pillow size?
The queen pillow size is 20 × 30 inches (50.8 × 76.2 cm). It is a different measurement from a queen bed, which is 60 inches wide. The queen bed width appears only in the calculator.
What are king size pillow dimensions?
King size pillow dimensions are 20 × 36 inches (50.8 × 91.4 cm). One guide also calls this size “jumbo”. The king bed in the calculator is 76 inches wide, so two king pillows fit across it.
Why does a pillow size show only one source?
Some pillow sizes, such as boudoir (12 × 16 in) and throw (18–20 × 18–20 in), are listed by one guide only. The page flags any size with a single source. Treat those figures with more caution than the sizes listed by all three guides.
Are travel or pregnancy pillows in the chart?
No. The guides give no fixed size for travel or pregnancy pillows, so the chart does not include them. Check the product’s own dimensions instead.
What is the standard pillowcase size, and does it fit a queen pillow?
The standard pillowcase size is 20 × 26 in (50.8 × 66 cm), the same figures as the standard pillow it holds, in the guide that lists pillowcase sizes. One guide says a standard pillowcase fits both a standard and a queen pillow, and a queen case fits both sizes too. The guides match each pillowcase to its pillow size, so compare the case measurements with your pillow before you buy.
