Standard garage door sizes are the widths and heights that published guides give for single, double, triple and RV doors. This free tool shows those sizes in a chart and checks which of them fit an opening you measure. The chart uses figures from four guides, labelled Source A to Source D, so you can see where each number comes from. It runs in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent anywhere. Use it to plan a door size, then confirm the final measurements with a dealer before you order. Door heights are mostly 7 or 8 feet, and widths run from 7 to 20 feet for single and double doors.

How to use the garage door size chart

Choose a door type, enter your opening, and read the result. The steps below follow the order of the controls on the page.

  1. Open the Type menu and choose one of the four options: Single-car door, Double-car door, Triple-car (oversized) door, or RV or extra-tall door.
  2. Type your opening’s width into the Opening width field, then pick its unit from the menu beside it.
  3. Type your opening’s height into the Opening height field, then pick its unit from the menu beside it.
  4. Read the result line. It says whether every listed size fits, some sizes fit, or none fit. The size line under it gives the width and height range for the type you chose.
  5. To change the units of the chart, open More options and choose feet (ft) or meters (m) in Show the chart in.

To try the tool quickly, press one of the example buttons: Single 9×7, Double 16×8, RV 14×12 or Triple 32×7. Press Reset to restore the default settings.

The result line says that every size listed fits your opening, that some sizes fit, or that none of the sizes listed fits. A warning appears under the result for the triple-car and RV rows, which few sources cover.

Is the size the door or the opening?

A garage door size is the size of the door itself, not the hole in the wall. The tool treats the opening you enter as the space the door must fit into. It adds no room for tracks, springs or the opener, so a size that fits on the check still needs clearance checked with a dealer.

What is the standard size of a single garage door?

Source A says 8 or 9 feet wide is the most common single door width and Source D says 9 by 7 feet is the most common size. A single-car door is usually between 7 and 10 feet wide and between 7 and 8 feet tall. Those are the lowest and highest figures across the four sources. Source C lists a single door at 8 by 7 feet, Source A says 8 or 9 feet wide is most common, and Source D gives the widest range at 7 to 10 feet wide.

The sources disagree by 2 feet in width and 1 foot in height. The tool does not average them. Instead it shows the full range, and the “Each source’s range” line lists each source’s own figure. If your opening is at the small end of the range, check the source that gives the smaller number.

In meters, the single-car range is 2.13 to 3.05 m wide and 2.13 to 2.44 m tall. Choose meters (m) in the Show the chart in menu to see those figures.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard size of a double garage door?

A double-car door is listed at 12 to 20 feet wide and 7 to 9 feet tall across the sources. Source C gives a single size of 16 by 7 feet, and Source B gives a narrower range of 16 to 20 feet wide. The sources differ by 4 feet in width and 2 feet in height.

How tall is a garage door?

Most single and double doors are 7 feet tall, which is the height every guide lists. Source A, Source B and Source D also offer 8 feet. Source A says doors 9 feet and taller are available for double doors.

How big is an RV garage door?

An RV or extra-tall door is listed at 12 to 20 feet wide and 9 to 16 feet tall. The two sources that cover this type describe it very differently. Source A describes an extra-wide door up to 20 feet wide, and Source D describes a 12 foot wide door that is 14 or 16 feet high. Confirm the size with a dealer before you order.

Why do the sources give different sizes?

Each guide has its own list of common sizes, and the sources do not all agree. Source C notes that all garage openings are unique, which is one reason a single standard figure does not cover every home. The chart shows each source’s figure so you can compare them.

Is there a standard size for a triple garage door?

Only one source lists a triple-car (oversized) door, at 32 feet wide and 7 to 8 feet tall. Because there is nothing to compare it with, treat that figure as a single reference point. The tool shows a warning when this is the case.

Does this tool cover prices or openers?

No. The tool covers door sizes only. It does not include garage door prices, insulation or opener sizes.
