The standard tub size is that of the alcove tub: about 60 in (152.4 cm) long and 30 to 32 in (76.2 to 81.3 cm) wide. Four published guides agree on that length and width. This Bathtub Size Chart lists the length, width and height of alcove, drop-in, freestanding, corner and walk-in tubs, and it checks which tub types fit the length and width of your space. It runs in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent anywhere. People who search for a standard tub size, a standard bathtub size or a bathing tub standard size are usually asking about this alcove tub. The other tub types are in the chart too, with the number of guides that list each one.

How to use the Bathtub Size Chart

  1. Open the Type menu and choose one of the five tub types: Alcove, Drop-in (built-in), Freestanding, Corner or Walk-in.
  2. Type your space length into the Space length field, then choose its unit from the unit menu next to it.
  3. Type your space width into the Space width field, then choose its unit from the unit menu next to it.
  4. Under More options, open the Show the chart in menu and pick inches (in) or centimeters (cm).
  5. Read the result line, which lists the tub types that fit your space. Under it, the size line shows the length, width and height for the type you chose.

To try the tool quickly, press one of the example buttons: Alcove 60×32, Room 72×36, Small 54×30 or Corner 60×60. Each one loads a sample tub type and space. Press Reset to return the tool to its defaults.

The result line says which tub types have every size listed fitting your space, or only some sizes. Pick any type and read the first table below the result to see how many of the four guides list it. Open More options and use Show the chart in to switch the chart between inches and centimeters, or press Reset to return the tool to its defaults.

What is the standard size of a bathtub?

The standard bathtub is the alcove tub, at about 60 in long and 30 to 32 in wide. All four guides give the same 60 in length, and the width is 30 in in one guide and 30 to 32 in in the others. Other tub types vary much more, so the alcove tub is the size on which the guides agree most.

The chart gives a range for each measurement, not a single figure. The range runs from the lowest figure any source gives to the highest, and nothing is averaged. If one guide says 14 in and another says 20 in, the chart shows 14 to 20 in, not 17 in. The “Each source’s range” line and the table for the type you chose show every guide’s own figure, so you can see where the numbers come from.

Freestanding tubs show a much wider spread, at 55 to 72 in long and 27 to 36 in wide. Guide B calls its figures “approximate planning ranges rather than manufacturing standards.” Treat every range on this page as a starting point, and measure the tub you plan to buy.

Why do guides give different tub heights?

Guides disagree about height, and the tub height they quote may not mean the same thing in each guide, for example the height of the rim or the overall height. Compare the height figures with care.

The disagreement is largest for freestanding tubs. Source A gives 24 to 30 in, Source B gives 20 to 28 in, and Source C gives 15 to 20 in. Source D gives no height at all. Alcove heights also differ: 14 to 16 in in Source A, 14 to 20 in in Source B, 18 in in Source C, and no figure from Source D. The chart shows the lowest and highest figure for each type.

Height appears on the chart, but the space check does not use it. The check compares only the length and width you enter, so a tub’s height does not decide whether it is listed as fitting. Before you buy, confirm the height with the manufacturer’s figures for the tub you choose.

Frequently asked questions

How long and wide is an alcove tub?

An alcove tub is about 60 in (152.4 cm) long and 30 to 32 in (76.2 to 81.3 cm) wide. Its height on the chart ranges from 14 to 20 in (35.6 to 50.8 cm).

How big is a freestanding tub?

A freestanding tub ranges from 55 to 72 in (139.7 to 182.9 cm) long and 27 to 36 in (68.6 to 91.4 cm) wide. Its height runs from 15 to 30 in (38.1 to 76.2 cm), and the guides disagree more on this type than on any other.

Is anything I enter saved or sent anywhere?

Nothing is sent anywhere. The tool runs in your browser, so the measurements you type stay on your device.

Why does the result say some sizes fit?

The check compares the length and width you enter with each guide’s figures. A guide counts as fitting when its largest figure fits your space, and as partly fitting when only its smallest figure does. For example, a 54 × 30 in space gives “No type has every size fitting, but some sizes fit for: Drop-in (built-in), Walk-in,” because only the smallest figures of those types fit.

Does the check leave room for a deck or a door?

No. Drop-in and corner tubs need a deck or extra floor space around them, and walk-in tubs need room for the door to swing. The page does not calculate either, so measure those areas yourself before you buy.
