This towel bar height tool gives the mounting height from the floor for a towel bar, towel ring, hand towel bar or robe hook, for an adult, a child or someone with limited reach. It lists what each named guide says, side by side, and works out the heights above your own vanity top. The usual answer for an adult towel bar is 48 in, or 42 to 48 in. Everything runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded, and the tool is free with no sign-up. The sizes are typical figures from public guides, not building-code rules, so adjust them to the people and the room.

How to use the Towel Bar Height Tool

  1. Choose what you are mounting: a towel bar, a towel ring, a hand towel bar by the sink, or a robe or towel hook.
  2. Choose who uses it: an adult, a child aged 3 to 4, 5 to 8 or 9 to 12, or someone seated or with limited reach.
  3. Enter the height of your vanity top from the floor. Pick inches, centimetres, feet or metres. A typical vanity top is 30 to 36 in. This is used for towels mounted above a vanity.
  4. For a towel ring, open More options and enter the distance from the bottom of the ring to the centre of its mount. The tool adds it to the guide’s 48 in ring height.
  5. Read the heights, one line for each guide that gives a figure. Guides are never averaged.
  6. Read the clearances, such as the space under stacked bars and the distance from outlets.
  7. Use the table to compare the guides. A dash means the guide gives no figure.

Mark the wall, hold a bath towel against the mark and check that it clears the floor, the vanity and any door swing before you drill. Bars are measured to the mount centres, not to the top of the bar, so a bar that hangs below its brackets sits lower than the figure suggests. Check the wall behind the mount for studs or anchors.

How is the towel bar height worked out?

No formula sets towel bar height. The tool returns the figures of each guide for the item and user you pick. Where a guide measures from the vanity top, it adds that distance to the vanity height you enter.

For an adult towel bar the home-repair guide says 48 in to the mount centres, and the home-living and home-decor guides say 42 to 48 in. The home-living guide gives a full range of 30 to 52 in. Above a vanity, the home-repair guide puts the bar 16 to 18 in above an average vanity, which is 30 to 32 in high. A worked example: a 32 in vanity gives a bar at 48 to 50 in from the floor.

A towel ring is described in two ways. The home-repair guide sets the bottom of the ring at 48 in, then says to add the distance from the ring bottom to the centre of the mount; with 6 in, the mount is at 54 in. The home-decor guide says at least 20 in above the vanity top, and the same guide puts a hand towel bar 20 to 22 in above the vanity top.

What heights do the guides give for children and robe hooks?

The home-repair guide caps a child’s bar at 36 in for ages 3 to 4, 40 in for 5 to 8 and 44 in for 9 to 12. The home-living guide says 30 to 36 in for young kids, and the home-decor guide says 36 to 48 in in a children’s bathroom and 36 in for limited mobility. For a robe hook the home-decor guide says 70 in, and a hook guide says 66 in to the hook centre in a 60 to 70 in range, with kids’ hooks at 48 to 54 in.

For someone seated, the 2010 ADA Standards reach range of 15 to 48 in above the floor is shown as a reference only. That standard applies to covered buildings, not homes, and this page makes no compliance claim.

Stacked bars need 2 in of clearance below each towel, and one guide says to keep 4 in from outlets and switches.
