This page lists typical towel sizes for eight towel types, from washcloths to oversized beach towels, shown as width by length in inches or centimeters. The tool above gives the size range for the type you pick, along with the figures from each of the five sources it compares. It runs in your browser, is free, needs no sign-up, and nothing you enter is uploaded.
Each figure comes from one of the sources it compares, and nothing is averaged. Because sizes vary by maker and country, treat the results as typical sizes rather than fixed measurements. The table below the form lists all eight types in the unit you choose, and a second table says what each source is.

How to use the Towel Size Chart
- Open the tool at the top of this page.
- In “Towel type”, pick the towel you want to check. For a first test, choose Bath towel.
- In “Show sizes in”, pick inches or centimeters. The conversion uses 1 in = 2.54 cm exactly.
- Read “Size (range across the guides)” for your type. For Bath towel in inches, the tool shows 20–30 × 40–58 in (50.8–76.2 × 101.6–147.3 cm).
- Look at “Each guide, width × length”. Every source is shown with its figures, and the lowest-to-highest range is shown beside them. Nothing is averaged.
- Read “How much the guides differ”. For bath towels, the sources differ by up to 10 in in width and 18 in in length.
- Check for the warning on single-source rows. The jumbo bath sheet and beach towel rows have only one source, so nothing else was available to compare them with.
- Compare a second type. Choose Hand towel, and the tool shows 15–20 × 25–39 in.
- Scroll to the table below the form to see all eight types at once, in the unit you chose, and the second table that says what each source is.
Four presets (“Bath towel”, “Hand towel”, “Bath sheet” and “Beach towel”) let you jump straight to common types. The table below the form lists all eight types in the unit you chose, so you can compare them without changing the controls.
What is the size of a standard bath towel?
A standard bath towel does not have one fixed size in the sources used here. The bath towel range on this page runs from 20 to 30 in wide and 40 to 58 in long, which is 20–30 × 40–58 in (50.8–76.2 × 101.6–147.3 cm).
Each source gives its own figure. One guide gives the full 20–30 × 40–58 in range, another gives 27–28 × 54 in, and the third gives 28 × 55 in. The guide that gives 27–28 × 54 in notes that many brands use a 27 in width, so 27 in is a common width among these figures.
These figures show why the answer is a range. For bath towels, the sources differ by up to 10 in in width and 18 in in length, so a towel near one end of the range can look quite different from one near the other end.
How are towel sizes ranged, and why do they vary?
Each row is built from the figures of up to five sources: three guides for household towels, one reference page for beach towels, and retail product listings for oversized beach towels. The tool shows the smallest and largest figures from these sources as the range. It does not average them.
Sizes are always written as width × length, with width first. For example, 20 × 40 in means 20 in wide and 40 in long. When you switch units, both numbers are converted with 1 in = 2.54 cm exactly, so 20 in becomes 50.8 cm. The converted values are exact conversions of the sourced numbers, not new measurements.
Sizes vary by maker and country. For hand towels, the three guides give 15–18 × 25–30, 17 × 30 and 20 × 39 in, which produces the range 15–20 × 25–39 in. For oversized beach towels, the figures are 40 × 70 in on the reference page and 40 × 72 in and 36 × 68 in in two retail listings, so the row shows 36–40 × 68–72 in and carries a warning about the wide variation.
A range tells you what to expect, not what you will get. Before you buy a set to match a towel bar or a space, check the exact figures on the product listing you plan to buy.

Frequently asked questions
What is the size of a standard bath towel?
The bath towel range on this page is 20–30 × 40–58 in. One guide gives 27–28 × 54 in and notes that many brands use a 27 in width, and another gives 28 × 55 in, so no single size is fixed.
What is the size of a hand towel?
The hand towel range is 15–20 × 25–39 in. The three guides give 15–18 × 25–30, 17 × 30 and 20 × 39 in.
Why does this page show a range instead of one size?
Each row shows the lowest and highest figures from the five sources, and it does not average them. Sources differ, so a single number would hide real variation.
How does a beach towel compare with a bath towel?
The beach towel range is generally larger, at 30–35 × 60–70 in, compared with 20–30 × 40–58 in for bath towels. That beach towel figure comes from one reference page, so the row carries a warning that nothing else was available to compare.
What is the difference between a bath towel and a bath sheet?
A bath sheet is 35–40 × 60–72 in across the guides, which is larger than the bath towel range. The jumbo bath sheet is a separate row at 39 × 79 in, and it also comes from a single source.
Can I switch between inches and centimeters?
Yes, use “Show sizes in”. The conversion uses 1 in = 2.54 cm exactly, and the table below the form lists all eight types in the unit you chose.
