Two car garage dimensions in the guides read for this page run from 22 to 26 feet wide and 20 to 24 feet deep, or 6.71 to 7.92 by 6.1 to 7.32 meters. Each guide’s own range is shown next to that, never an average. These figures come from three published garage guides, and this free chart shows them for one-, two- and three-car garages so you can check which sizes fit a space you measure.
The tool runs in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent anywhere. Use it to compare a standard 2 car garage size, a single car garage dimensions range, or a 3 car garage dimensions range against the room you have.

How to use the garage size chart
- Open the Type menu and choose One-car garage, Two-car garage or Three-car garage.
- Enter the width of your space in Space width.
- Pick the unit for that width from the menu beside the field.
- Enter the depth of your space in Space depth, then pick its unit.
- Read the result line. It says either that every size listed fits your space for certain garage types, or that no type has every size fitting but some sizes fit.
- Read the size line under the result. It shows the lowest to highest width and depth from all sources for the type you chose.
- Open More options and choose feet (ft) or meters (m) in Show the chart in if you prefer metric figures.
The four example buttons, “Two-car 24×24”, “One-car 12×20”, “Three-car 36×24” and “Tight 20×20”, fill in a sample space so you can see how a result looks. The Reset button restores the defaults. The line “Each source’s range” lists each source’s own figures, so you can check any single guide.
The result line names the garage types for which every size listed fits, or the ones for which some sizes fit. Pick Three-car garage to see a warning that only one source lists that size.
How big is a two car garage?
A two-car garage is commonly 22 to 26 feet wide and 20 to 24 feet deep. Those are the lowest and highest figures any of the three guides gives, not an average.
The guides do not agree exactly. Guide A gives only a depth of 20 feet for two cars. Guide B gives 22 to 26 feet wide and 20 to 24 feet deep. Guide C gives 22 to 24 feet wide and 24 feet deep. The chart keeps each guide’s figures separate, so you can see where they differ.
What is the minimum size of a two car garage?
The smallest two-car figures in the chart are 22 feet wide and 20 feet deep. Guide C calls 22 by 24 feet the recommended minimum and 24 by 24 feet the ideal, which is deeper than the chart’s lowest depth. The “minimum” here means the lowest figure any guide gives, not a legal limit.
The chart uses a simple rule to decide whether a size fits. A guide counts as fitting when its largest width and depth fit your space. It counts as fitting partly when only its smallest figures fit. A 20 by 20 foot space, for example, can hold only part of the two-car range, because 20 feet is below the 22-foot minimum width.

How wide should the door of a two car garage be?
Guide A says a two-car garage door should be at least 14 feet wide and is commonly 15 or 16 feet. It also gives 9 to 10 feet of width and 18 to 20 feet of length per car, and says a 24 foot length leaves room for cabinets in front of parked cars. Guide B gives three-car garages at 31 to 34 feet wide, the only three-car figures the chart has.
A fourth source, a home-improvement site, gives floor areas only, with no width and depth: about 240 square feet for a standard one-car garage, 400 for a two-car and 600 for a three-car garage, and it mentions 20 by 20 or 24 by 24 feet as standard design dimensions. That source is not in the chart, but its areas are close to the chart’s figures: 22 by 20 feet is 440 square feet.

Frequently asked questions
How big is a one car garage?
A one-car garage is 9 to 16 feet wide and 18 to 24 feet deep, or 2.74 to 4.88 by 5.49 to 7.32 meters. Guide C recommends 12 by 24 feet for a single car, and 14 by 22 or 16 by 24 feet for larger vehicles.
How big is a three car garage?
A three-car garage is listed at 31 to 34 feet wide and 20 to 24 feet deep, or 9.45 to 10.36 by 6.1 to 7.32 meters. Only one source, guide B, lists this size, so the chart shows a warning that there is nothing to compare it with.
Is anything I enter saved or sent anywhere?
No. The tool runs in your browser, and nothing is sent anywhere.
Does the check leave room for walls, a workbench or open car doors?
No. It compares the width and depth you enter with each guide’s figures and adds no allowance for those things. If you need room for a workbench or for doors to open fully, measure your space with that extra room in mind.
Is there one standard garage size I should build to?
No. These sizes are rules of thumb from guides, not building-code minimums. Local codes and zoning decide what is allowed where you live. Some California cities, for example, require 10 by 20 feet per car, according to guide A.
