Match the blade span to the room

Blade span drives airflow and noise more than any other single figure. As a rule of thumb, a 20 to 24 inch fan suits a small room such as a study or box bedroom, a 52 inch fan suits a living room or large bedroom, and an 84 inch fan suits a very large open-plan space. Our range includes all four of those sizes, but only 10 of the 19 products publish a measurement. For the other nine, you will need to open the product page. Do not assume a fan will fit because the room is a similar shape to one you have seen before. Measure the wall run first, then check the published span against it.

Flush mount versus downrod

Flush mount fans sit close to the ceiling and suit rooms with low headroom, typically below 8 feet. Downrod fans hang lower and move more air in rooms with higher ceilings. Our stock includes several flush mount models, including 52 inch and 42 inch options, but the product data does not label every fan by mounting type. Read the title and description on each product page to confirm. If your ceiling is standard height, a flush mount is usually the safer choice. If you have a vaulted ceiling, you will need a downrod, which may be sold separately. Check before you buy.

Light output and control

Most ceiling fan lights in our range use integrated LED. Some list dimmable output and a memory function, which returns the light to its last setting when you switch it on. Colour temperature options such as 3CCT appear on some models, letting you choose between warm, neutral and cool white. Remote control is common, and a few products mention app or voice control. Two products are marked adjustable, which may refer to colour temperature or another setting; the product page will confirm. If dimming matters, check that the fan's light is described as dimmable and that the remote supports it. Not every remote does.

Motor, speed and reversibility

Several fans in our range use a DC motor, which is generally quieter and more efficient than an AC motor. Some list six speeds and a reversible function, so you can run the blades clockwise in winter to circulate warm air and anticlockwise in summer. Timer settings of 1, 4 or 8 hours appear on some models. These features are not universal. The product data does not tell us which motor type every fan uses, so check the individual listing. If you want a fan for a bedroom, quiet operation is worth prioritising. A DC motor is often the better choice for that, but confirm it is stated on the page.

Indoor and outdoor use

Some ceiling fan lights in our range are described as suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, including patio and covered porch areas. Outdoor-rated fans are built to handle damp conditions, but they still need a covered position unless the listing says otherwise. Our data does not give a damp or wet rating for every product, so do not assume a fan is outdoor-safe just because it appears in a search for patio fans. Check the product title and description for the words indoor, outdoor or damp rated. If you are mounting under a porch, a flush mount outdoor fan is often the simplest fit.

What the guide cannot tell you

Two products can be described in the same way and still differ in important respects. A fan listed as 52 inch with a remote may have a different motor, a different light output or a different mounting system from another 52 inch fan with a remote. Our counts and measurements come from the data we hold, but that data is not complete for every product. The individual product page is the governing source for dimensions, materials, features and compatibility. Use this guide to narrow the field, then read the full listing before you order. If a detail is not on the page, ask before buying.

Fitting and safety

Ceiling fans need a secure fixing point. A fan rated for a standard light fixture may be too heavy for a plasterboard ceiling without a brace. If you are replacing a light, check the existing box and the fan's weight. Most fans in our range do not list a weight, so the product page or the manual is the place to confirm. For high ceilings or heavy fans, use a qualified electrician. Keep blades at least 7 feet above the floor and 18 inches from walls. These are general guidelines, not product-specific claims. If your ceiling slopes, you may need a special mounting kit, which is not always included.
