Measure the wall run first

Before you choose a mirror, measure the width and height of the wall space you have in mind. A mirror that is too large will crowd the area; one that is too small can look lost. As a rule, a mirror above a console or sink should be no wider than the furniture below it. For a focal point on a blank wall, aim for a mirror that covers roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of the wall's width. If you are hanging a mirror opposite a window, check that it will not reflect glare into the room at eye level. Match the frame to the room

Frame material sets the tone. Metal frames, which make up the largest share of our stock, suit modern and industrial schemes and are often slim, so they do not dominate. Glass frames are minimal and can blend into a pale wall, while rattan and wood bring texture and warmth to softer, more natural interiors. Think about the other metals in the room: a gold frame next to chrome taps will look deliberate only if you repeat the mix elsewhere. If you want the mirror to recede, pick a frame colour close to the wall. If you want it to stand out, choose a contrast. The material you select also affects weight, so check that your fixing can take it.

Shape and orientation

Round, rectangular, arched and irregular shapes all appear in our current range. Round mirrors soften a room full of straight lines and work well above a round table or in a hallway. Rectangular mirrors are efficient for narrow spaces and can be hung vertically to make a wall feel taller or horizontally to widen a space. Arched mirrors add a classic curve and are often used over a sink or console. Irregular or wavy shapes act as a piece of art in their own right, so give them a plain wall to sit against. The orientation you choose should follow the shape of the wall: a tall, narrow gap suits a vertical hang, while a wide, low wall takes a horizontal one.

Mounting and safety

Four of our mirrors are described as wall-mounted, and one has a swivel function. For any mirror, use fixings rated for the weight and the wall type. Plasterboard needs hollow-wall anchors; brick and concrete need masonry plugs. If the mirror is heavy or large, fix into a stud or use a French cleat. A swivel mirror is useful for a vanity because you can angle it without moving the base, but it still needs a secure mount. Safety glass or a shatterproof backing reduces risk in busy areas. Check the product page for the exact mounting hardware included, as this varies. Never rely on a picture wire alone for a mirror wider than about 24 inches.

Light and reflection

Where you place a mirror changes how a room feels. Opposite a window, a mirror doubles the daylight and makes a small room feel larger. Opposite a dark wall, it will simply reflect the dark. In a bathroom, a mirror above a sink should be lit from the front or side, not from above, to avoid shadows on your face. In a hallway, a mirror at eye level gives a final check before you leave. Avoid placing a mirror where it will reflect a television screen or a bright lamp directly into seated eyes. Price does not automatically indicate quality, but it often reflects the amount of material and the complexity of the shape. A 20-inch mirror and a 40-inch mirror are not comparable on price alone. Set a budget, then prioritise size and material. If you are buying for a rental, a lighter, lower-cost mirror is easier to move and less risky to hang. If you are buying for a permanent home, spending more on a larger statement piece can be worthwhile.

What this guide cannot tell you

Two products described in the same way can still differ. A metal frame may be brushed or polished; a glass mirror may have different edge treatments; a rattan weave may vary in tightness.
