Match the diameter to the room

Room planning for ceiling fans is stable across brands, so you can size the fan before you look at finishes. A 20 inch fan suits a small utility room, a walk-in closet or a tight hallway where a larger sweep would crowd the walls. A 42 inch fan is the usual choice for a bedroom or a small living room up to roughly 12 feet by 12 feet. A 52 inch fan is the common pick for a main living room, an open-plan space or a covered patio. If a room is longer than it is wide, place the fan on the long axis so the air reaches both ends. Measure the wall run first, then subtract the clearance you need from any tall furniture or cabinet doors that swing upward.

Check the ceiling height before you choose a mount

Two products can be described in almost the same words and still differ in ways that matter to you. Blade pitch, motor housing depth, the exact colour of a finish and the contents of the box are all things a short description cannot settle. Installation and safety basics

Ceiling fans are heavier than a light fitting and they move, so the mounting needs to be sound. Fix the bracket to a structural member or to a fan-rated box, not to a plasterboard ceiling alone. If you are not confident working at height or with the wiring, use a qualified electrician; the cost is small next to the risk. Switch off the circuit at the breaker before you start, and test that it is dead. Once the fan is up, check that all blade screws are tight and that the fan does not wobble at speed.
