Measure the wall run first

Before you choose a fan, measure the room. For a ceiling fan, the blade span should be about two-thirds of the room's shortest side. In a room 10 feet by 12 feet, the shortest side is 10 feet. Two-thirds of 10 feet is about 6.7 feet, or 80 inches. That is larger than any fan we stock. So for a 10 by 12 room, a 48-inch or 52-inch fan will work. It will not be too small. For a room 12 by 14 feet, the shortest side is 12 feet. Two-thirds is 8 feet, or 96 inches. Again, a 48 or 52 inch fan fits. For a room 15 by 20 feet, the shortest side is 15 feet. Two-thirds is 10 feet, or 120 inches. A 52-inch fan is smaller than ideal, but it will still move air. If the room is larger, consider two fans. Measure the ceiling height too. For a ceiling 8 feet high, you need a flush mount fan. For a ceiling 9 feet or higher, you can use a downrod. Our stock includes flush mount and low profile fans. Match the blade span to the room

We stock fans with 48-inch and 52-inch blade spans. Seven of the 16 fans list a span. The other nine do not. If you need a specific span, look for it in the title or on the product page. A 48-inch fan suits rooms up to about 12 by 12 feet. A 52-inch fan suits rooms up to about 14 by 14 feet. For larger rooms, you may need more than one fan. The span affects airflow. A larger span moves more air at the same speed. But it also needs more clearance. Keep at least 18 inches between the blade tips and the walls. Also keep at least 7 feet between the floor and the blades. If you have low ceilings, a flush mount fan saves space. Our flush mount fans are marked as such. If you have high ceilings, you can use a downrod to lower the fan. That improves airflow. Check the product page for the downrod length. Some fans include a downrod; others do not.

Wood blades and other materials

Six of the 16 fans have wood blades. The rest use materials like ABS plastic or metal. Wood blades give a traditional look. They are common in farmhouse and craftsman styles. ABS blades are lighter and more resistant to moisture. They suit outdoor or damp areas. Metal blades are durable and easy to clean. They fit industrial and modern rooms. The material affects the fan's weight and balance. Wood blades may need more frequent dusting. ABS blades can warp in extreme heat. Metal blades can be noisy if they are not balanced. None of these differences are absolute. Two fans with wood blades can still perform differently. The motor and control system matter more. Our stock includes fans with DC motors. DC motors are quieter and more efficient than AC motors. They also offer more speed settings. Check the product page for motor type. If you plan to use the fan outdoors, look for a damp or wet rating. Not all our fans are rated for outdoor use.

Light kits and dimming

Every fan in this category includes a light. But the light type varies. Some have integrated LED lights. Others use replaceable bulbs. Integrated LEDs last longer and use less power. But you cannot change the colour temperature unless the fan has that feature. Replaceable bulbs let you choose the bulb. But you must match the bulb type and wattage. Some fans have dimmable lights. Others do not. If you want dimming, check the product page for that feature. Some fans include a remote control that dims the light. Others require a wall dimmer switch. Our stock includes flush mount and low profile fans. Low profile fans are similar to flush mount. They are designed for low ceilings. If you have a high ceiling, you can add a downrod. But the downrod must match the fan's motor housing. Some fans come with a downrod; others do not. You may need to buy one separately. Also check the ceiling joist. You need a sturdy mounting point. If the joist is not in the right place, you may need a ceiling fan brace.

Controls and smart features

Most fans in this category come with a remote control. Some also work with smart home systems. Our stock includes a fan that works with WiFi and Alexa. That lets you control it by voice or app. Smart features can be convenient. But they require a stable WiFi connection. If your WiFi is weak, the fan may not respond.
