The trade-off is that the fitting still needs a ceiling box with enough room for the driver or wiring, and the drop must clear any door swing or tall furniture. Measure the wall run and ceiling height first

Start with the ceiling height and the wall run. For a semi flush mount, the fitting's total drop matters more than its diameter in low rooms. A drop of 150mm to 250mm is common, but check the product page for the exact figure. In a hallway, keep at least 2.1m clear below the fitting so people do not duck. In a bedroom, a drop of 300mm to 400mm over a bed can work if the ceiling is high, but avoid placing it directly over the pillow if you read in bed. For a dining area, centre the fitting over the table, not the room, and allow 750mm to 900mm between the tabletop and the bottom of the light. Measure the wall run to work out how much light spreads along a corridor. A single semi flush mount may not cover a long hallway; two smaller fittings on separate switches often work better.

Match the light output to the room

Light output is measured in lumens, not watts. As a rule, allow about 100 to 150 lumens per square metre for general lighting in a living room or bedroom, and 300 to 400 lumens per square metre for a kitchen or workspace. A 12-inch, 24W LED fitting in our range is rated at 2880 lumens, which suits a medium room. A 13-inch, 36W fitting is rated at 3600 lumens, better for a larger kitchen or open-plan area. If the fitting takes replaceable bulbs, check the maximum wattage and the base type. Many semi flush mounts use E26 or E27 bulbs, but some integrated LED models do not take bulbs at all. Colour temperature also matters: 2700K to 3000K gives a warm, relaxed feel; 4000K is neutral and good for tasks; 6500K is cool and bright, often used in utility areas. Some fittings let you switch between these.

Check the material and finish against the room

Our stock includes glass, acrylic, wood and metal finishes. Glass and acrylic shades spread light evenly and are easy to wipe clean, but glass can be heavy and may need a stronger ceiling box. Acrylic is lighter and less likely to break, though it can yellow over time in strong sunlight. Metal shades and frames are durable and suit industrial or modern rooms, but a solid metal shade directs light downwards and can leave the upper ceiling dark. Wood blades or wood accents add warmth and suit traditional or coastal schemes. Match the finish to your other hardware: black fittings tend to recede against dark ceilings and stand out against white ones; white or clear fittings blend into pale ceilings. If the room has a lot of texture, a simple shade works better than an ornate one. Always check the weight of the fitting against what your ceiling box is rated to hold.

Fitting and installation notes

Semi flush mounts are usually wired to a ceiling box, so the box must be rated for the weight of the fitting. If you are replacing a pendant, the existing box may be fine, but a heavy glass or fan unit may need a brace. Fans and fan lights need a box rated for fan support. Most fittings in our range are hardwired and do not come with a plug. If you are not confident with electrical work, use a qualified electrician. For dimming, check that the fitting and the dimmer switch are compatible; some integrated LEDs need a specific dimmer type. Remote-controlled models, including the fan lights, need a permanent live feed and may not work with a standard wall dimmer. Allow enough cable slack to make the connections before you lift the fitting into place. If the ceiling is sloped, check whether the fitting is rated for sloped ceilings; many semi flush mounts are for flat ceilings only.
