Plan shelf heights around what you store

Start by grouping your pantry items into three bands: tall bottles and boxes, medium jars and tins, and small packets. Tall items need the top or bottom shelf, where there is usually more vertical room. Medium items work best at eye level. Small items can go in a basket or drawer if you have one.

If the shelving is adjustable, set the gaps before you load it. If it is fixed, measure each gap and assign categories accordingly. A 29-inch cabinet will have different internal spacing from a 71-inch rack, even if both are called pantry storage.
